In an afternoon press conference yesterday, Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens publicly announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer on November 9th. Hutchens indicated that she would continue to run the department during what she said would be an aggressive treatment plan.

Hutchens will be shifting some of her duties to other members of her senior command staff, and will be limiting her speaking engagements while she undergoes treatment. Hutchens told reporters that she would continue to be fully engaged in the leadership of the department and that she intends to seek reelection in 2014. Hutchens sent a memo to department staff on November 19th notifying them of her health condition and intention to remain at the helm.
