There’s a battle under way over what Civic San Diego should be and whether the city-owned nonprofit should exist at all.
Civic San Diego has been chugging along in its role of managing the city’s old redevelopment projects and regulating downtown proposals since 2012.
Now the group is trying to step outside of the downtown box: It’s looking to plan and help pay for redevelopment near transit stations in lower income areas. But it needs more money.
While Civic San Diego is trying to expand, community groups are disputing its efforts, a state Assembly member is trying to limit its authority and one of its own board members has filed a lawsuit against it and the city.
