A Bright Future for Modesto.

It’s nothing new for city and county officials to jump on board the “green” bandwagon. In fact, the trend is rapidly increasing.
However, Modesto City Council member Brad Hawn is doing more than weighing the wagon down; he’s powering it.

Hawn has made tremendous strides in reducing carbon emissions and modernizing energy production. Thanks to his work and ingenuity, thousand of individuals will have solar electricity delivered to their homes.

But this had nothing to do with his work on the City Council.

In July 0f 2008, Hawn, an engineer by trade, completed his work designing the largest rooftop solar panel installation in the world for the General Motors factory in Zaragoza, Spain. The project consists of 85,000 solar panels, which is enough to generate power for 4,575 households.

Hawn has also worked on similar projects for GM in California, including Fontana and Rancho Cucamonga.

Elected officials often reflect upon their own life experience when making policy, but this is rarely the case when it comes to pushing their own environmental agendas. In the coming years, it will be interesting to see how Council Member Brad Hawn draws upon his experience to help power the City of Modesto.

Further reading on Hawn’s work can be found in the Modesto Bee.
