San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has vetoed the controversial “sanctuary law.”
The measure passed by San Francisco County Supervisors early this week protects illegal immigrants – even those who are accused of felonies – by not reporting illegal minors to the feds unless convicted of a serious crime.
Supervisors have vowed to overturn the veto, according an Associated Press report.
Newsom believes the new law now makes it easier for illegal immigrants to commit crimes.
Newsom said the board has misused the city’s “sanctuary” policy that was intended to make the city safer by allowing illegal immigrants to report crimes without fear of being deported.
“The sanctuary city was never designed to be in any way, shape or form a framework where people can commit crimes and be shielded against those crimes,” Newsom said, according to Fox News. “I mean that’s perverse, it’s absurd.”
