A city councilwoman was arrested for serving mimosas at her place of business.
Judy Wilkinson was handcuffed in front of approximately 25 customers at her bridal shop for serving champagne and orange juice in Columbus, Ga. Wilkinson is a city councilwoman in West Point, Ga.
The police officer was pretending to shop for a tuxedo when he made the arrest. According to the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, the City Attorney said Wilkinson broke two laws: a city ordinance and a state statute.
The Columbus ordinance states: “”It shall be unlawful for any person, corporation, partnership or other legal entity to possess, sell, or possess for the purpose of sale at any business location or transport for the purpose of sale, any alcoholic beverage where the person does not have a valid alcoholic beverage license.”
The Georgia law reads: “Says the state law: “No person shall manufacture, distribute, sell, handle, or possess for sale, or otherwise deal in, alcoholic beverages without first obtaining all applicable licenses required by this title. Each person holding a license issued pursuant to this title shall display the license prominently at all times on the premises for which the license is issued.”
According to the article, police said Wilkinson didn’t have a city or state license to serve alcohol.
Wilkinson was recently re-elected to her third, four-year term on the City Council.
