The mayor of La Habra Heights has sued an unsuccessful candidate for City Council for slander and over an ownership dispute regarding radios used by the La Habra Fire Watch, a fire prevention group.

Mayor Howard Vipperman sued George Edwards for false statements claiming that Vipperman used dirty campaign money to buy the radios, according to the Whittier Daily News.

Vipperman said he gave Edwards $4,059 to buy six radios, all with his own money.

Edwards told the newspaper that he was surprised by the lawsuit, maintaining he never said anything about “dirty campaign money.”

“I don’t recall saying that,” Edwards told the Whittier Daily News. “I can’t understand it. It was a shocker considering Howard and Karen (Vipperman’s wife) were founding members.”
