A code enforcement officer faces charges for using his position with the city to steal cars and earn a profit.

Charlie Frye’s job was to check on abandoned vehicles; when he’d show up he would report the vehicle gone and call a friend to tow it away, according to a local Fox news station.

He was arrested when a woman called about her car, and the case had no record of the vehicle being towed since it was reported gone on arrival. The office was suspicious and called the police, resulting in an undercover officer following Frye to see what was happening.

The stolen vehicles were being taken to a scrap yard and Frye got cash for the metal scrap. According to the article, Frye was only receiving $20 to $50 per vehicle.
