A man who twice ran for a City Council position was arrested for allegedly threatening to blow up the local Courthouse.

Officers say 43-year-old Daniel Bates, who ran for City Council in Cedar Rapids City, Iowa, said he was going to buy explosives in Missouri and make national news by blowing up the Linn County Courthouse, according to the Associated Press.

Police arrested Bates on Dec. 3. at his home. He is charged with two aggravated misdemeanor counts of making threats and first-degree harassment, according to the report.

Bates ran in 2005 and in 2009 for the Cedar Rapids City Council, and received more than 2,000 votes.

According to the Associated Press, police escorted Bates out of a city council meeting earlier this year for allegedly using profanity.
