[T]he men and women in blue — whether city police or UC Berkeley campus police — aren’t always viewed as the good guys. The relationship between the two sides, both police and youths acknowledge, can be tenuous.

But members of both sides have set out to change that.


With a $25,000 grant from the Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund at UC Berkeley, the agencies have recently launched the Police and Life Academy For Youth, or PLAY, to teach 16 middle and high school students about breakdowns in the criminal justice system, teen domestic violence, personal safety, emergency preparedness, drug laws, search warrant laws and individual rights.
