A Sierra Club survey found wide disparities in the fees in the Bay Area for solar installations on buildings like schools, churches and retail stores.

Brisbane, for example, charges $13,510 for a 131-kilowatt system, while Los Gatos charges $796 and Los Altos Hills just $48 for a solar system of the same size.




“Some cities are charging way over what we determine to be the maximum cost-recovery level,” said Kurt Newick, chairman of the Global Warming and Energy Committee of the Sierra Club’s Loma Prieta chapter, based in Palo Alto. “We’d like to see the cities come up with a reasonable fee that covers their cost.”
