Water service was shut off and traffic disrupted in three neighborhoods on Sunday, a time when fewer crews than normal are available to do repair work, according to the city Public Utilities Department.

While multiple water main breaks — typically the result of aging pipes — do happen from time to time, they are an uncommon occurrence, acknowledged public utilities spokesman Arian Collins.


“I’d definitely classify it as unusual, and on top of that, we don’t have enough crews to work on all three on a Sunday,” he said.
