From here-on out, American Canyon is going with contracted and part-time building inspectors. It’s a move that the city hopes will save about $800,000. 

But the story puts a personal face on the often sterilized business of layoffs and cut backs.

Despite his impassioned plea for officials to review his case, the city’s last full-time building inspector is scheduled to be laid off next month, officials said.

Last week, Ken Mackey said he’s been with the city for a decade and appealed to City Council members to rethink his Dec. 29 layoff date.

“I enjoy (my job) and I consider this my home,” he told the council. “If you could just reconsider.”
