The departure of Downey’s last city attorney was not nearly as happy of an occasion as its appointment of its new one.

In fact, the last full-time city attorney that Downey had was described as “embattled” when he was fired. At the time, he was representing the City of Bell.

But the new attorney, Yvette Garcia, has a strong background in public law, particularly labor issues, open meeting laws, conflict of interest law, and land use issues.

These skills should be powerful traits for her new role in Downey.

Yvette M. Abich Garcia has been appointed Downey’s new city attorney and will begin her position Dec. 27.

Garcia, who has 14 years of experience in public law, previously provided counsel to the cities of Barstow, Calabasas, Commerce, Los Alamitos and Sierra Madre.

She currently holds the position of senior counsel with Colantuono & Levin, a prominent municipal law firm in California.
