Hercules’ interim city manager has found himself unemployed sooner than expected. Although his contract runs through June, Charlie Long’s contract has been ended by the City Council after City Manager Nelson Oliva signaled he is ready to resume a full work schedule.

Mr. Long has made multiple appearances on PublicCEO as his two months of work in Hercules was full of reform and streamlining.

Many of his actions invoked in the ire of residents, and it was a mixed bag of emotions at his farewell meeting.

The Hercules City Council on Tuesday terminated interim City Manager Charlie Long and welcomed back City Manager Nelson Oliva, as a gallery of supporters applauded.

Many in the audience later took to the podium to denounce Long and praise Oliva, the City Council and the city’s Affordable Housing Department.

The announcement came at the end of a closed session that preceded a special meeting of the council called to discuss several issues that Long considered urgent. Long had wanted council ratification of his plan to phase out by the end of May the city’s affordable housing contractor, Affordable Housing Solutions Group, also known as NEO Consulting Inc.
