Ousted interim city manager Charlie Long may be returning to Hercules soon.

This time, his job will be overseeing the city’s Bayfront redevelopment projects.

During Long’s time as city manager, he revealed the city’s financial situation had deterriorated, and that redevelopment projects were approaching financial insolvency. 

However, before Long could implement measures to address the financial problems, he was replaced. His removal lead to public uproar, which helped start the recall effort against several city council members and preceded the sudden retirement of the mayor.

The city council gave approval during closed session.

Former interim City Manager Charlie Long could be back in Hercules soon, as a consultant.

Vice Mayor Joanne Ward, who became mayor later in the evening Tuesday, announced at the end of a closed session that the City Council had given its approval to bring back Long. A contract with Long likely will be on the agenda of the next City Council meeting, Ward said. The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 8.

The vote was 3-1, with Councilman Don Kuehne abstaining.
