In a difficult story to read, and what must have been a far more difficult story to tell, the only mayor that Menifee has ever known revealed that he recently received a lung transplant and his wife is preparing for treatments for cancer.
The disease that caused the lung transplant has plagued Edgerton since before he ran for mayor, and could keep him a one-term mayor, as the recovery could keep him from continuing the grueling public schedule demanded by the office.
His plan of having his wife take care of him as he recovered was complicated when a routine examination revealed she had esophageal cancer.

In a revealing and emotional open letter to the city, Menifee Mayor Wallace Edgerton stated Wednesday that his wife, Judee, is battling cancer and that his recent lung transplant was meant to save him from an incurable disease.
He added that the two of them are staying at a hotel close to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles for the next several weeks and that, if all goes well, they may be returning to Menifee by late July.
