The County of Inyo seeks a hand-on leader, experienced in building and energizing work teams, to lead its Public Works Department. To further entice qualified, talented applicants, the County is offering a competitive salary of up to $125,000 DOQ (includes 10% premium license stipend) and an excellent benefit package. Under the County’s CalPERS retirement plan, the County pays the employee contribution, and pension are calculated with a 2 @ 55% formula. The County will also pay a portion of medical monthly premium for employee and dependents, and 100% of monthly premium for dental, vision, and life insurance.

But the job, and its benefits (fringe and otherwise) must be earned. The County is requiring a minimum of six years of professional experience in a civil engineering and county or city public works environment, including at least five years at a management level. An educational background equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, along with a valid California Registration as a professional Engineer is required.

The successful applicant must possess demonstrated leadership skills and be capable of making decisions, which reflect macro and micro understanding, and must be computer savvy.

When not managing the department’s 60-member team, the next Director of Public Works can take advantage of the clear lakes and streams, infinite open space, and four-season outdoor adventure. Inyo County is home to the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states.

Inyo County is home to approximately 17,500 residents and encompasses 6.5 million acres, making it the second largest county in the state. Despite its size, Inyo is a community’s county, and the next director will help promote the small-town appeal by cultivating and maintaining relationships with residents and employees.
