The Public Works Director/City Engineer is a key member of the City’s executive team. This position is responsible for directing 5 key City Divisions, supervising approximately 123 full and part time employees and oversees a total operating budget of $39 million. The Capital Projects budget for FY 2011-12 is $86.4 million (the Council-approved Capital Improvement Program identifying all projects required through the build-out of the City proposes approximately $1.66 billion for over 400 projects.)

Through the recent re-sequencing of several key infrastructure projects, the City is committed to completing a number of capital projects within an aggressive timeline in order to build specific improvements identified in the City’s Circulation Plan, improve traffic circulation in the center of the City and enhance Economic Development efforts.  The successful and timely completion of these projects will be a major focus of the Public Works Director over the next few years.

Under the direction of the City Manager, this position will also provide a variety of other administrative support including representing the City Manager in presentations to the public and City Council, formulating policies, being the lead on the development of special studies and management analyses and serving as the City representative on various community committees and advisory groups.

For these duties, the city is offering a competitive compensation package that includes $10,121 – $16,119 per month in salary. But don’t overlook the benefits:

  • PERS 2.7% @55 (employee pays the employee portion), educational reimbursement of $1500 annually;

The ideal candidate will be well versed in public works administration and civil engineering principles, and will be an integral partner in the City’s commitment to enhancing our development services process, working with developers on advancing projects, and making Moreno Valley a “Best Place to do Business.”  The Public Works Director/City Engineer must be an advocate for the City as a regional leader and possess exceptional leadership and communication skills. 

The ideal candidate will have at least five years management in public works.  The position requires a BA/BS in a related field and Professional Engineering registration in California.  A Master’s Degree is highly preferred. Experience at the executive level working for a medium to large local government agency is also highly desirable.

A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
