The Conta Costa County Superintendent of Schools Joseph Ovick presented a new initiative to the Martinez City Council that will launch this spring in Contra Costa County entitled, “Choosing Civility”. Ovick struck upon this idea because of his feelings that only a few public figures demonstrate civility on television, radio, or any other media outlet. Read the report here.

“Civility is a core value of a well-functioning community, and quality of life depends on how people treat each other” Ovick said.

Professor at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Forni is said to be the inspiration behind this collaborative campaign. Dr. Forni is the author of “Choosing Civility: The 25 Rules of Considerate Conduct.”

According to a letter to Mayor Rob Schroder, Ovick is working with the professor of Ethics to create a broad based plan that can be implemented into the culture of schools, government, business, organizations, neighborhoods and families.

The resolution states that two-thirds of the public “strongly” believe that the American Society is uncivil. It is the hopes of the Contra Costa Department of Education that the “Choose Civility” campaign will instill civil obedience and create a positive community influence.
