Vanderiel Batista took one parting shot at his opponent in a hotly contested campaign by riding a donkey to his inauguration. The donkey had been a symbol of the campaign.
Originating from a debate where Mr. Batista was accused of being uneducated (a “burro” in Portugese), Batista ended up using it as a theme in his campaign. He even went on to promise to ride a donkey to his inauguration. His opponents objected and obtained a court order preventing the use of a donkey in further campaign activities.
Batista violated that court order when he borrowed the inaugural burro, mounted it, and rode to his swearing in.
The courts have sent the case to prosecutors who could levy the fine. According to a BBC report, the recommended fine is $250.
