New York City kicked off its fifth Big Apps challenge this week with a special plea from Mayor Bill de Blasio that entrants develop ways to reduce traffic fatalities in the city. Toward that end, the city released a database of all traffic collisions where police reports were filed, dating back to 2012.
The traffic reports are part of 11,000 data sets the city is making available for Big Apps, which will award $100,000 in cash prizes along with some $200,000 in perks and product prizes. (Challenge financial sponsors include SCC Global Partners GE and Microsoft.)
