After 36 years in law enforcement, Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy announced earlier this month that he plans to retire in October, 2020. McCoy has served as Oceanside’s Police Chief since January, 2006 and is the longest serving Police Chief in the history of the department.
During his tenure, Chief McCoy built a culture focused on community-based policing and worked with the department and the community to lower Oceanside’s overall crime rate. Since his appointment, the City has seen a 33% reduction in overall crime and a 28% reduction in violent crime.
“We thank Chief McCoy for his transformation of the Police Department into one that emphasizes community policing, and for building positive relationships with the community while reducing crime,” said Mayor Peter Weiss.
Prior to his appointment in Oceanside, Chief McCoy spent 20 years with the City of Long Beach, rising through the ranks to the position of Commander. He began his law enforcement career in 1984 with the City of Manhattan Beach. Chief McCoy previously retired in October, 2013 but stayed on as Interim Chief and was rehired in April 2014. At the time, Chief McCoy was asked to mentor his staff for future leadership, and the City is now in a favorable position with several strong internal candidates.
“I’m deeply honored to have worked with such great people within the Oceanside Police Department and to serve our community. I am able to retire knowing that the members of our department are poised to not only keep Oceanside safe, but will serve the City with professionalism and provide excellent customer service,” said Chief McCoy.
The City will initiate a recruitment process immediately to begin a search for a new chief. The process is anticipated to take several months.
