City of Pico RiveraThe City of Pico Rivera recently launched a Streetlight Conversion Project to acquire local streetlights from Southern California Edison (SCE) and upgrade more than 3,000 lights to brighter, more efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures. Pico Rivera Innovative Municipal Energy (PRIME), the City’s locally-run power provider will continue to supply 100% renewable energy to the City’s streetlights through PRIME Future

“The Streetlight Conversion Project will not only save energy and funds, but also increase public safety by improving the quality of light and effectiveness throughout the City of Pico Rivera,” said Mayor Gustavo Camacho. “This project is a step forward in accomplishing PRIME’s goals to reduce energy consumption and costs while stimulating local economic development.”

The new LED technology is expected to save Pico Rivera over 1,475,000 kilowatt hours and approximately $322,000 in energy costs in the first year after installation. As a PRIME Future customer, the City will also continue leading the community on the path to meet California’s state mandated goal of 100 percent clean energy by 2045.

For this project, the City and PRIME have collaborated with Tanko Lighting, a municipal streetlighting agency that provides technical solutions to save taxpayer dollars through energy-efficient street lighting conversions, while leveraging rebates available through SCE.

“Tanko Lighting believes that relationships are at the core of any successful project or enterprise. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the City of Pico Rivera and to support their vision of reducing energy costs, saving energy, and increasing public safety,” said Jason Tanko, founder and president of Tanko Lighting. “We will continue to help the City plan and manage their streetlight systems through a data-driven, transparent process.”

The Streetlight Conversion Project commenced in April 2019 with an initial audit of the City’s existing streetlights, and in October 2020 the installation of new, energy-efficient LED fixtures will begin. Residents can expect to see technicians in bucket trucks around the city completing the LED installations with little to no impact on traffic. Installation is expected to be completed in early 2021.
