Alameda Interim Public Works Director Erin Smith has been named the City’s new public works department director, announced City Manager Eric Levitt.

Over the last five months, Ms. Smith has led the department through the significant challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ms. Smith has been with the department since 2014, and as deputy director was one of the key individuals responsible for the development of Alameda’s award-winning Climate Action and Resiliency Plan. Ms. Smith has also worked for the City of Albany and Oakley Water Strategies as an environmental consultant and environmental scientist.

Alameda’s Public Works Department was the nation’s 115th agency to be accredited by the American Public Works Association and is the steward of Alameda’s public infrastructure — responsible for its design, construction, and maintenance.

“Erin’s leadership, expertise, and project management skills make her well suited to lead the department forward,” stated City Manager Eric Levitt.

The Public Works Department is supported by 74.75 FTE and an annual operating budget of $28.5 million. The annual salary for the Public Works Director is $201,204.
