The City of Salinas is one of ten California jurisdictions to be awarded funding from the California Interagency Council on Homelessness (Cal ICH) Family Homelessness Challenge Grant. The City will receive  more than $2.6 million to purchase single-family homes and add accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to serve families with dependent minors that are experiencing homelessness. This proposal was developed in partnership with Bay Area Community Services (BACS) who will purchase the single-family homes and add the ADUs to the purchased properties. This project includes service coordination partnerships with The Coalition of Homeless Services Providers, Catholic Charities, Housing Resource Center, YWCA, Salvation Army, Monterey County Office of Education (MCOE), and Homeless Children and Youth Services Program.

“We currently have a lot of families in shelters — they don’t have permanent addresses. The “Family Homelessness Challenge Grant” will allow us to give support to homeless families in Salinas by providing housing for them,” said Mayor Kimbley Craig. “We’re excited about the opportunity to reduce homelessness in our community, and this is a huge step towards achieving that goal.”

Properties have not yet been selected but will comply with Fair Housing Regulations and will not be concentrated in any one area or neighborhood. Property selection will be based on market availability, location, size, and site constraints.
