The Rancho Cordova City Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Micah Runner as City Manager, effective January 1, 2023. Current City Manager Cyrus Abhar announced his retirement in September 2022 and will retire at the end of 2022 after seven years at the helm.
Mr. Runner is currently the city’s Deputy City Manager with wide-ranging responsibility over Economic Development, Community Development, the Community Enhancement & Investment Fund, Code Enforcement and Facilities.
Mr. Runner has over 20 years of experience in municipal government with a primary focus in economic development and management. He previously served as the Director of Economic Development for the City of Stockton, the Economic Development Manager in Rancho Cordova, and a Senior Project Manager in the City of Sacramento.
“I know I speak for all of my colleagues on the City Council when I share that we’re thrilled to announce the promotion of Micah Runner to the position of City Manager,” said Mayor Donald Terry. “We are confident he has the skills and experience to lead our city into the future.”
The City Council decided to conduct an internal recruitment for Rancho Cordova’s next city manager. As part of this recruitment, the City Council asked for input from the community, city partners, and the city’s leadership team via a survey. The survey asked what the new city manager’s top three priorities should be, and what the top skills or qualities the new city manager should possess. The City Council considered this valuable feedback and used it as part of the interview and hiring process.
“I’ve worked with Micah for many years now and have every confidence in his ability to lead the City of Rancho Cordova into its next phase,” said current City Manager Cyrus Abhar. “As I move into retirement at the end of this year, it’s a great feeling knowing that the city I care for deeply is in excellent hands and will continue to prosper.”

Rancho Cordova’s city manager is directly hired by the City Council. Mr. Runner’s contract has terms similar to those of his predecessors, and his term as City Manager begins on January 1, 2023.
