In a significant environmental stewardship effort, the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) is planting over 100 trees at Greenridge Park as part of its commitment to climate change and sustainability efforts that also enhance community. This initiative made possible through a CalFire tree grant secured by the City of San Leandro, aims to replenish the park’s tree canopy and counter the loss of approximately 40 trees due to environmental factors, including a destructive beetle infestation and drought affecting the pines.

The Tree Planting event will be part of the H.A.R.D.’s Volunteers in Park (V.I.P.) Program. The event is scheduled for December 2, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers from the community are invited to participate in this impactful endeavor by registering at tinyurl.com/HARDvip. To ensure a safe and productive experience, volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, sun hats, sunscreen, a water bottle, and gloves. We encourage youth to participate, but they must be with a parent or guardian.

“Our commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement drives initiatives like the Greenridge Park Tree Planting,” stated  Rick Hatcher, President of the Board of Directors at H.A.R.D. “This project not only rejuvenates the park’s greenery but also fosters a sense of ownership and pride among residents in preserving our natural spaces.”

Furthermore, organizations interested in coordinating volunteering dates or co-sponsoring activities with the V.I.P. program are encouraged to email volunteer@haywardrec.org. HARD welcomes collaborative efforts to expand the impact of this initiative and other community-driven projects.
