Under administrative direction from the City Council, provides overall and general legal advice, counsel

and assistance to the City Council, Boards and Commissions, and City Staff; reviews contracts and other documents requiring legal review; represents the City in court and administrative proceedings. Also acts as general counsel to the City as Successor to the Redevelopment Agency. Acts as a key member of the City’s management team.

Qualifications: 

Education/Training: Graduation from an accredited law school.

Experience: Five years of experience in a wide variety of contract and tort law with at least three years of experience in a municipal law department.

License/Certification: Active membership in the California State Bar. Possession of a valid California State Driver’s License.

The ideal candidate for the City Attorney of Antioch should be an experienced legal professional with a comprehensive understanding of municipal law, adept at providing legal counsel to city officials, departments, and various boards and commissions. They should have substantial experience in handling complex legal matters, including land use, cannabis regulations, and public records, ensuring that the city’s actions comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as the City Attorney must effectively interact with the City Council, staff, and external stakeholders. A collaborative problem-solving approach is crucial for navigating the diverse legal challenges faced by the city. Preferred qualifications include a minimum of five years of experience in California municipal law, with prior roles as a City Attorney or Assistant City Attorney, and experience in managing a legal team.
