Laguna Woods Village, the West Coast’s premier private community in Orange County, California, is home to more than 18,700 55+ active adults representing nearly 12,750 households.

Laguna Woods Village first opened its gates in an unincorporated area of Orange County on September 10, 1964. Within six months, nearly 900 families had moved into what was soon to become the largest gated, age-restricted community in the country. Today, more than 18,000 people reside in the Village. The City of Laguna Woods was incorporated on March 24, 1999, and 90% of its population is comprised of Laguna Woods Village residents.

Laguna Woods Village is an age-restricted community as defined under California Civil Code §51.3. At least one occupant must be 55 years of age or older, and all other persons who reside in the community must be at least 45 years of age, unless the other occupant is a spouse, a registered domestic partner or a primary provider of physical health care. Retirement is not a requisite for residency, as many residents continue to maintain active careers. Any person wishing to reside in the community must obtain prior approval from the board of directors.

Under general direction, plans, organizes, schedules and supervises the ongoing activities of staff performing work in vehicle and equipment maintenance, transportation (transit), custodial and streets and sidewalks maintenance divisions; performs related duties as required.

Supervision is exercised over all departmental personnel through department supervisors. Work involves regular contact with other departments, divisions, vendors and residents.

The ideal candidate will have experience leading an operations team and bring their expertise on implementing best practices for the General Services group. One way to obtain those skills is to have worked within a public agency environment in a leadership capacity. Laguna Woods Village is a non-CalPERS agency so this is a great opportunity for a retired annuitant.  The successful candidate will have not only technical experience, but also will have demonstrated administrative skills. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are vital to success.

The next General Services director will need to be willing to listen and learn about the organization prior to implementing new ideas. The right candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. They will need to be able to communicate effectively with residents and staff to ensure needs are met. Interpersonal communication skills are key.

The successful candidate will have the energy and enthusiasm to understand the needs of the community and translate that to excellent service. They will encourage department staff to develop ideas and goals that improve the department as well as foster a desire to implement them.

The next General Services director will demonstrate the highest level of integrity, honesty and transparency in their communication to develop the trust and respect of their team. They will trust staff to fulfill their duties and ensure work is completed in timely, professional manner.

The salary for the position is $115,000 to $135,000 annually, depending on qualifications. Laguna Woods Village offers a generous benefits package.
