Between Mayor Chuck Reed’s pension reform initiative and the ongoing fight down in San Bernardino over retirees’ pensions, CalPERS has got a lot on their hands at the moment. Nonetheless, California’s pension giant has been busy conducting audits of some of its member organizations.

In an audit of the Loomis Fire Protection District (LFPD) scheduled to be released late November, CalPERS alleges that Chief Dave Wheeler was illegally employed at the LFPD while also collecting a pension from his retirement with the Alameda County Fire Department.

According to the Sacramento Bee, “Wheeler’s pension pays $139,338 per year and his fire district job has averaged $61,000 a year.”

The agency was first noticed about the potential for employment violation in December of 2010. LFPD legal counsel disagrees with CalPERS over the double dipping accusation.

Double dipping isn’t the only criticism Wheeler has faced throughout his time in Loomis.

Wheeler was elected to the Loomis Town Council in 2012. A group of concerned citizens are questioning the legality of Wheeler’s service on the council in conjunction with his employment with the LFPD.
