San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is no stranger to creating new, surprising fees. So what is Newsom calling the new tobacco?
Sodas.
Newsom will introduce legislation this fall to charge retailers that sell sugary beverages. The revenue generated from the fee would go to his Shape Up San Francisco exercise program.
The fee doesn’t require a public vote, only a decision from the Board of Supervisors.
