A local government official in California was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of making criminal threats against his wife.

Norwalk City Councilman Rick Ramirez was booked on suspicion of making a threat involving “death or great bodily injury” against his wife, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s authorities said.

The 41-year-old Ramirez was released on $50,000 bail, following his arrest on 11:30 p.m. after his wife called the sheriff’s department, authorities told the Whittier Daily News.

Ramirez is due for arraignment in court on Nov. 20.

Ramirez has a background in law enforcement, serving for more than 15 years with the city of Norwalk’s Office of Public Safety and Orange County Marshal’s Department, according to the city’s Web site. He also served with the Santa Ana Police Department and the city of Long Beach within the Park Ranger program.
