The developer of a proposed NFL stadium in Los Angeles County has donated $300,000 to change the state’s term limits law.
Seed money for the political committee, Californians for a Fresh Start, has come from three major donors within the past two weeks. The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce has donated $10,000, the L.A . County Federation of Labor has donated $100,000 and Majestic Realty, the developer, has given $300,000.
Proponents of the measure are hoping to place it on the November 2010 ballot.
A call to Majestic spokesman John Semcken was not immediately returned.
Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Chamber and County Labor Fed filed an initiative that would alter the state’s term limits law. The measure is similar to changes proposed in Proposition 93, which was narrowly rejected by voters in March of 2008. The proposed initiative would shorten the overall time a person may serve in Sacramento from 14 years to 12 years. Under current law, legislators can serve three two-year terms in the Assembly and two four-year terms in the Senate. The initiative would allow lawmakers to serve all 12 years in one legislative house.
The partnership to change term limits mirrors the joint effort from Majestic and the labor federation to push through a bill to facilitate plans to build an 80,000-seat stadium in the City of Industry. Majestic had run into obstacles from the neighboring City of Walnut and turned to Sacramento when local negotiations broke down.
The governor signed a bill, AB 81 3x by Assemblyman Isadore Hall, D-Compton, that will move the stadium project along.
