wrote about the city of Fremont, where firefighers salaries averaged nearly $160,000 last year.

City employee salaries have increased significantly more than revenue since 2006, contributing to Fremont’s financial struggles, which have resulted in several layoffs and service cutbacks.

More than half of the city’s full-time employees were paid more than $100,000 last year, and 23 city workers’ salaries topped $200,000, compared with just four in 2006, according to city figures.City Manager Fred Diaz received the highest compensation last year, taking home $272,502 — about $7,000 more than in 2008.

The next highest paid employees were City Attorney Harvey Levine, $271,525; police Chief Craig Steckler, $242,443; and fire Chief Bruce Martin, $230,638.
