Voters in the city of Oxnard approved Measure “O” in November 2008 in an effort to fund improvements to city services. The nearly $30 million generated from the half-cent general purpose sales tax has been used towards neighborhood improvements, public safety, and cleaning up the community. Read the report here.
The City Council has played an active role in understanding the community’s concerns by holding study sessions to set objectives for future funds. On May 17 the council approved a new fire station at College Park, the Public Safety Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management System, and an increase of 16 new police officers. According to the staff report these additions are consistent with the council’s commitment to protect critical services impacted by the State’s decision to slash revenue owed to the City.
The Measure O Citizen Oversight Committee reviews expenditures and updates the community on current discussion and recent decisions. The public can visit Oxnardnews.org for more information.
The report states that $4.3 million in Measure O funding is currently being proposed as follows:
- $3,600,000 to fund major street repairs.
- Improve facilities and programs for Oxnard seniors in the amount of $200,000.
- Building of a youth/teen center in the amount of $100,000.
- Funding for the Fire Department training Academy of $400,000.
Measure O passed with 65.1 percent voter approval in 2008.
