Back in June of this year the city of Fresno and the Taishan City of the People’s Republic of China seized the opportunity to become sister cities and acted in accordance with the Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the People’s Republic of China and the United States of America.

According to Fresno staff report, this formal establishment of a sister city relationship was desired by local community members wishing to enhance the mutual understanding between counties and strengthen the friendly cooperation between the two cities.

This agreement solidifies their commitment to engage in reciprocal exchanges and cooperation in the fields of trade, tourism, culture and education. Strong city relations will be built over time through enhanced communication and consultation. Mutually beneficial relationships such as this expand economic opportunity and encourage cultural development and understanding.

Councilmember Oliver L. Baines III, District 3 submitted this report to the whole council for approval on June 28, 2012. The Mayor of Taishan City is Zhang Lei.
