A study of 3,500 California voters examines how, in the current media landscape, voters are learning about government and politics, as well as the extent of their interest in these topics. The study also illustrates the connection between the media and civic participation: More than two-thirds of voters (68 percent) say that their news source “let them know about ways they can get involved.”

An executive summary, full report, report data and a highly visual printable infographic of the study are available at the Institute for Local Government’s website.

The IGL also has information on how local agencies can use media to ensure that participation in public engagement is inclusive and effective. Local government officials who are interested in increasing civic awareness and involvement should be sure to check it out.
