$248K for 124 EV charging ports under construction in County parking garage
The funding is the first – and likely will remain among the largest for any single project – under Peninsula Clean Energy’s EV Ready program, which aims to install 3,500 charging ports in San Mateo County over the next four years.
The 124 EV charging ports will be available to county employees – and may in the future also be available to the public on evenings and weekends – as part of the county’s new Government Center Parking Structure in Redwood City that is expected to be open by this fall. The structure is built to incorporate next-generation green design and technology, including the ability to potentially install hundreds more EV chargers thanks to technical and other assistance Peninsula Clean Energy has provided.
“The County has committed to achieving carbon neutrality from its operations by 2035,” said David Canepa, president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. “Installing EV chargers is one of many investments that will need to be made to transition our polluting gas vehicles to clean electric vehicles. The partnership with Peninsula Clean Energy is helping the County make deep emissions reductions.”
“This is a fantastic example of public agency leadership and just a taste of the potential for EV charging deployment in San Mateo County,” Peninsula Clean Energy CEO Jan Pepper said. “Electrifying our vehicles is central to reducing our transportation-related emissions and our larger mission of mitigating harmful climate change.”
