City of Torrance logoCongresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) in partnership with the City of Torrance held a press conference at Torrance City Hall to present two checks to support local initiatives.

Congresswoman Waters presented the first check in the amount of $938,000 to Torrance Mayor Patrick J. Furey. The funds were secured to support the Torrance Public Works Department’s Airport Storm Water Basin Project. Torrance is one of ten recipients of Community Project Funding, a part of the recent government spending package that will directly impact residents throughout the 43rd congressional district.

Congresswoman Waters met with Mayor Furey and saw the great importance of this regional stormwater project at the Torrance Municipal Airport. Thanks to these additional funds, the project will help divert, capture and treat urban stormwater runoff from Torrance and several neighboring communities, reducing pollutants and improving stormwater management.

In addition, Congresswoman Waters presented a second check to the Torrance Transit Department in the amount of $6.2 million. She expressed strong support for Torrance Transit’s proposal to purchase five all-electric zero-emission buses in order to continue to improve air quality, reduce emissions and offer regional mobility. The funds will also be used to build additional charging infrastructure to support these buses.

Torrance Transit Director, Kim Turner said, “I would like to thank Congresswoman Waters and her awesome staff for their assistance in applying for the FY 2021 Bus and Bus Facilities Grant Program. The all-electric buses that will be purchased with these grant funds will replace older CNG buses and pave the way towards a zero-emission fleet.”

Congresswoman Waters has been a supporter of the City of Torrance, advocating to the U.S. Department of Transportation to secure this grant to support Torrance Transit projects that will benefit the community at large.

Mayor Furey also presented Congresswoman Waters with a Certificate of Recognition in honor of Women’s History Month and said, “Congresswoman Maxine Waters’s dedication to public service and the people of this community is essential to our success. We honor her outstanding leadership, advocacy, fearlessness and legacy as an important political figure in the region, country and around the world.”
