City Manager David Gassaway has appointed John Sturdee as interim fire chief for the City of Fairfield following the retirement of Chief Matt Luckenbach. Sturdee assumed the role Tuesday, August 1, as the City prepares for a nationwide recruitment.
Luckenbach is retiring on good terms to focus on his health. “It was an honor serving as chief for Fairfield. The unwavering support of the community and the organization were the main reasons for my success. As I shift towards focusing on me and my health, I appreciate all the well wishes I have received from my colleagues and friends. I am confident John Sturdee will continue providing high-quality leadership to Fairfield Fire,” said former Chief Luckenbach.
Matt Luckenbach was born in Fairfield, graduated from Fairfield High School in 1990, and began his service in 1992 as a volunteer firefighter until he was hired full-time in 1998. In his 30-year tenure, Matt has served as a firefighter, engineer paramedic, captain, battalion chief, deputy chief and was appointed chief in 2021. Luckenbach has made many positive regional relationships and significant strides in developing mutual aid. He leaves a legacy of goodwill, innovation and collaboration.
