City of Merced logoMerced City Manager Stephanie Dietz is pleased to announce the appointment of Steven Stanfield as the new Chief of Police, effective October 30, 2023. Chief Stanfield brings a wealth of experience, dedication, and leadership to the position, ensuring the safety and security of our community.

Chief Stanfield has an impressive career spanning 27 years in law enforcement, during which he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to public safety and the well-being of the residents in Modesto, Calif. He has served with distinction in various roles within the Modesto Police Department, including helping develop and manage the city’s first HEART Team (Homeless Engagement and Response Team), CARE Unit (Community Assistance and Response Team), and Beat Health Unit, as well as developing the first Leadership Development Program within the agency.

Stanfield is currently assigned as Modesto Police Department’s Assistant Division Commander of Patrol Division where he oversees the city’s blue light camera program, the patrol schedule, Use of Force and Pursuit tracking, and manages the Real Time Crime Center.

“We are thrilled to welcome Chief Stanfield as our new Chief of Police. He embodies the values of our department and our community, and we are confident that he will uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and community engagement,” said City Manager Dietz.

Chief Stanfield’s leadership will play a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing safety and security in the city of Merced. He has a proven track record of building strong relationships with community members and collaborating with local organizations to address public safety challenges effectively.

I am committed to working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of our community members, and I look forward to collaborating with our dedicated officers and the entire Merced community,” said Chief Stanfield.

Chief Stanfield succeeds Interim Chief Craig Gundlach, who has served with distinction and dedication during the search for the next police chief. The Merced Police Department extends its heartfelt gratitude to Chief Gundlach for his outstanding service and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors.

The city of Merced invites members of the community and media to join us in welcoming Chief Stanfield during a formal swearing-in ceremony. Details regarding the ceremony will be announced shortly.

Stanfield’s annual starting salary will be $200,000.00.
