The City of Oakland is proud to announce its achievement as one of 119 cities worldwide on the 2023 CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project) Cities A List, securing top scores in both Climate Mitigation and Adaptation/Resilience categories. This recognition reflects the City’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, resilience and equity in the face of climate challenges.
Mayor Sheng Thao expressed her pride in the City’s achievements, stating, “This recognition is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our community, local businesses, and City departments working hand in hand to build a more sustainable and resilient Oakland. It reflects our shared commitment to addressing climate change and creating a vibrant, environmentally conscious city for current and future generations.”
Only 13% of global cities that reported in 2023 achieved an A score. A-List cities are demonstrating their climate leadership through concerted and effective action, just as national governments are being asked to do at COP28, the United Nations Climate Change conference. They are taking four times as many mitigation and adaptation measures as non-A List cities.
Key highlights of the City of Oakland’s climate justice accomplishments in 2023 include:
- Publication of the City of Oakland’s Zero Emission Vehicle Action Plan and expansion of the Universal Basic Mobility pilot in West Oakland
- Public draft release of the Oakland Urban Forest Plan, with $8M secured for implementation from the Inflation Reduction Act.
- New heat pump and air filtration systems for 9 libraries as community respite centers along with $9.25M for the Lincoln Community Resilience and Recreation Center in Oakland Chinatown.
These projects will improve the health and safety of Oakland residents, from cleaner vehicles, better maintenance and expansion of urban trees, and upgraded public buildings to provide heating, cooling and clean air during emergencies.
The CDP’s comprehensive evaluation assesses the environmental performance of cities worldwide, focusing on their efforts to combat climate change and adapt to the evolving landscape of environmental risks. The City of Oakland has not only met but exceeded expectations, earning distinguished rankings that underscore its dedication to sustainability and the well-being of its residents.
City Administrator Jestin Johnson commended the collaborative spirit and engagement of the community in achieving these milestones. “Our residents and businesses play a vital role in creating a sustainable and resilient Oakland. Together, we are actively shaping our City’s future and building a foundation that can withstand the challenges posed by a changing climate.”
