The City of Pismo Beach is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike James as the new assistant city manager. With a wealth of experience in municipal administration, James is set to contribute significantly to the city’s continued success.
City Manager Jorge Garcia expressed his enthusiasm for James joining the team, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Mike James as our new assistant city manager. His proven leadership skills and dedication to public service make him an excellent addition to our city government. I look forward to working closely with him as we strive to enhance the quality of life for our residents.”
Mike James brings a strong background in public administration, having previously served in various roles that reflect his commitment to effective governance. His expertise in strategic planning, community engagement, and organizational management aligns seamlessly with the City’s vision for the future.
In his new role, James will play a key part in overseeing city operations, collaborating with department heads, and working on initiatives aimed at implementing the City Council’s goals for the community. His experience and perspective are expected to bring valuable insights to Pismo Beach.

About Mike James
Mike James has over 24 years of public service, beginning as an Officer in the United States Army, Mike transitioned into local government serving in multiple leadership roles within the City Manager’s Office, Public Works, Public Safety, Parks & Recreation, Human Resources and Risk Management.
Since 2021, Mike has served as a Commissioner on the California Uniform Construction Cost Accounting Commission. Additionally, he volunteers on the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Assistant Chief Administrative Officer and Veterans Advisory Committee’s as well as on the California-ICMA Governance and Scholarship & Events Committee’s.
Mike earned his Master of Public Administration from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Mike is recognized by ICMA as a Credentialed Manager.
