The City of Grover Beach is proud to announce the retirement of Chief of Police John Peters, effective July 1. Chief Peters’ career in public safety began in 1994 and he has served communities across Massachusetts, Kansas, and California, joining the Grover Beach Police Department in 2006. Rising from a police officer to chief in 2015, his leadership has been pivotal in implementing the Presidential Task Force’s 21st Century Policing model, integrating advanced technology and securing over $3 million in grants, thereby enhancing community safety and engagement.
Chief Peters has been at the forefront of implementing significant departmental programs such as the body worn cameras, community cameras, the Cannabis Regulatory Program, SpidrTech Community Surveys and the Coffee with a Cop community engagement initiative, greatly contributing to the department’s efficiency and community trust.
Reflecting on his retirement, Chief Peters stated, “I am happy I had the opportunity to work in the very supportive community of Grover Beach. I can confidently say that the Police Department has the best team of professionals in its history and Jim Munro will make an excellent chief of police.”
We are also excited to announce that the city manager has selected Jim Munro as the incoming chief of police. Jim Munro currently serves as a commander with the Police Department and previously served with the Clovis Police Department as lieutenant. With a commendable career beginning in 1998 and a rich background in law enforcement technology, Jim Munro brings a wealth of experience and innovation to his new role. His dedication to community service and professional development is evident through his involvement with the California Police Chief’s Association Technology Committee and his educational achievements, including graduating from the prestigious FBI National Academy and earning a master’s degree from the University of San Diego.
Jim Munro expressed his commitment, saying, “I am deeply humbled to have been selected to lead the dedicated men and women of the Grover Beach Police Department, and I pledge to serve our community with integrity, dedication and a commitment to excellence. I’m thankful for the guidance and leadership of Chief Peters, and I congratulate him on a very successful career.”
The City of Grover Beach thanks Chief John Peters for his dedicated service and looks forward to the continued success and innovation under Chief Jim Munro’s leadership.
“On behalf of the City, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to Police Chief John Peters for his exemplary service to our community”, said City Manager Matt Bronson. “Chief Peters’ leadership and commitment to public safety have made a lasting impact on Grover Beach. We also congratulate Commander Jim Munro on his appointment as the new police hief. Commander Munro’s dedication and experience make him the ideal candidate to lead our Police Department into the future. I look forward to working with him to ensure the continued safety and well-being of our residents”.
Please join us in congratulating both on their respective new chapters. The City Council will formally approve Commander Munro’s employment agreement at the March 11 City Council meeting.
