Nestled in Southern California in the heart of the San Bernardino Mountains, Big Bear Lake offers a career opportunity as breathtaking as its scenery. The City of Big Bear Lake is currently seeking an experienced professional to join its team as the Deputy Public Works Director. This is not just a job—it’s a chance to become part of a vibrant, close-knit community while advancing your career in public service.

Why Choose Big Bear Lake?

A Lifestyle Like No Other

Big Bear Lake is a four-season destination, offering endless outdoor recreation. From skiing and snowboarding in the winter to hiking, mountain biking and boating in the summer, the City boasts activities for every adventurer. Imagine finishing a day at work and heading straight to the slopes, trails or lake! Big Bear Lake has it all no matter what types of adventures you are interested in.

A Community That Cares

With a population of just over 5,000, Big Bear Lake provides the charm of small-town living with a strong sense of community. Residents enjoy a slower pace of life, friendly neighbors and local events that bring everyone together. Depending on the season or special event in town, the City can welcome an additional 20,000 to 100,000 visitors for weekends and holidays.

This unique dynamic means that as Deputy Public Works Director, you’ll have the exciting challenge of serving both a tight-knit local community and a vibrant influx of visitors, ensuring top-tier infrastructure and services for all.

Accessible to Southern California
Located just two hours from major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and San Diego, Big Bear Lake offers a perfect balance of peaceful mountain living and easy access to City amenities.

“Public Works plays a vital role in keeping Big Bear Lake running smoothly, especially given the unique challenges of a mountain resort town,” said Assistant City Manager Sean Sullivan. “Whether it’s clearing snow during the winter, maintaining and expanding our roads and trails or ensuring our parks are ready for summer visitors, our Public Works team is at the heart of everything we do to support our residents and visitors.”

Your Role as Deputy Public Works Director

As Deputy Public Works Director, you’ll play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the City’s infrastructure. The selected candidate will provide planning, management and oversight of the operations and services of the Engineering, Public Works and Sanitation Divisions. Your work will directly impact the quality of life for Big Bear residents and visitors as you assist in the development and execution of Capital Improvement Projects, oversee the budgetary and administrative elements of the maintenance and operations activities, and support general engineering operations. As the situation requires, the Deputy Public Works Director will be on the front lines of the City’s response to disaster situations, be it winter storms or seasonal wildfires, supporting the community during times of need.

The City of Big Bear Lake has an aggressive annual Capital Improvement Program with a Fiscal Year 2024-25 budget of $5.4 Million over 22 projects and initiatives. The City’s CIP is historically well funded and it is continuing to trend positively with additional planned investments, in future years, in the City’s streets, trails, and general infrastructure.

We are looking for the right candidate to join our existing, professional team and provide the necessary leadership and support to push the team to the next level.
