In February 2021, the City of Grover Beach partnered with the South County Chambers of Commerce (Chamber) to launch a Buy Local gift card program to enhance economic activity in Grover Beach. Nearly 30 businesses participated in the initial launch, generating a total of $278,000 in funding for participating businesses from February through July 2021. Following the program’s success, the City has made this an ongoing annual program.

Local businesses participating in the Buy Local program receive funding from the City to purchase up to 20 gift cards valued around $25 each. The gift cards are offered to people who spend $100 at participating businesses and submit their receipts. The program enhances business attraction and encourages people to shop locally. The City of Grover Beach launched a fourth iteration of the Buy Local program in July 2024, with a targeted focus on supporting local businesses affected by construction of the West Grand Avenue Streetscape Project.

As of October 6, the Buy Local program has received over 300 receipts, totaling approximately $60,000 in spending. This initiative has generated a 5:1 return on the City’s investment, which was initially $15,000 for gift cards and administrative costs.

Grover Beach Community Development Director Megan Martin oversees the program and prepared the July 2024 staff report.

“Since launching the Buy Local program, the City has experienced remarkable growth and community support for local businesses,” said Ms. Martin. “The return on investment demonstrates that this initiative is not only driving consumer spending, but also building community and making a positive impact in Grover Beach. We appreciate our continued partnership with the Chamber in boosting local economic activity and attracting businesses to our City.”
