At the Jan. 27 meeting, Hercules City Council expanded its economic development efforts by continuing to invest in the Yiftee Gift Card program and the Tiered Business Attraction Grant program. These funding approvals reflect the City’s ongoing dedication to the financial success and future of Hercules.
At the meeting, the Hercules City Council allocated $25,000 to the “Shop Hercules” Yiftee Gift Card program, with a 25% bonus on gift card purchases to allow residents to receive additional money when shopping locally. The City Council also increased the maximum card value to $200 and established a one card purchase limit per user per quarter. Hercules residents can purchase the digital cards online and use them at participating Hercules businesses.
The City launched the Yiffee Gift Card initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic to support local businesses. Since 2022, the program has received $165,000 and has connected hundreds of residents with participating Hercules businesses.
“What began as a pandemic recovery effort has evolved into a meaningful tool for our community,” said Mayor Chris Kelley. “We are excited to further invest in the Yiftee program and enhance our small business in Hercules.”
Hercules also continued to support locally-owned businesses through a $200,000 investment in the Tiered Business Attraction Grant program. This funding allocates $100,000 for spaces over 15,000 square feet, $50,000 for spaces between 5,000 and 15,000 square feet and an additional $50,000 to the Eating a Drinking Establishment grant program, an initiative created to help new eating and drinking establishments by offsetting expected construction costs. The separate tiers will provide funding for businesses in smaller storefronts, as well as retail and commercial businesses seeking to occupy larger vacant spaces. Local entities may use this funding towards tenant improvements, permitting and necessary furnishings and equipment to incentivize filling vacancies in the city.
“We are committed to strengthening Hercules’ economy and ensuring that business owners have access to the commercial spaces they need to succeed.,” said City Manager Dante Hall. “These funds will help reduce barriers for new local storefronts and bring diverse options to our community.”
The City will continue to review grant applications on a first-come, first-served basis, and City staff have full discretion in awarding the grant according to the established guidelines and information submitted.
