Veteran law enforcement leader brings more than 33 years of service and deep Antelope Valley roots
The City of Palmdale announced the appointment of Michael McComas as the City’s Public Safety Director. McComas joined the Public Safety department in February, bringing extensive leadership experience and a strong commitment to the community he has called home for more than three decades.
“Palmdale is committed to building and sustaining a safe, welcoming community for everyone who lives, works and visits here,” said Mayor Eric Ohlsen. “Michael McComas brings proven leadership, sound judgment and decades of public safety experience. We’re excited to welcome him to the City and confident his service will strengthen our efforts to support residents and neighborhoods across Palmdale.”
McComas will lead a staff of 37 to address quality-of-life matters, including property maintenance and zoning violations, illegal dumping and fireworks, unpermitted vendors and signage, graffiti, green pools and coordination with service providers for individuals experiencing homelessness. The department’s staff includes code enforcement, community service and neighborhood compliance officers.
“Public safety is fundamental to quality of life, and residents expect responsive service and a community-first approach,” said Mayor Pro Tem Austin Bishop. “Michael’s background and his personal connection to the Antelope Valley make him an outstanding fit to lead this work. We look forward to partnering with him to keep Palmdale a great place to call home.”
The Public Safety department also offers community safety programs designed to empower residents and business owners to address concerns and foster a sense of shared safety and responsibility, including Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch programs. In addition, the department oversees the City’s spay/neuter program and manages contracts for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control, and private security services to provide comprehensive public safety services throughout Palmdale.
“I’m honored to join the City of Palmdale and to serve the community,” said Michael McComas. “The Antelope Valley has been my home for many years, and I believe the best public safety outcomes come from strong partnerships with residents, businesses and regional agencies. I’m excited to work alongside our team to address quality-of-life concerns and support a safe and vibrant Palmdale.”
Prior to joining the City, McComas served as a sworn law enforcement officer for more than 33 years with the Pasadena Police Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles Police Department. He retired from the Los Angeles Police Department as patrol captain of the Newton Station in South Central Los Angeles.
McComas is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and earned both a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice and a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Arizona State University.
