City of San Carlos logoAt the City Council meeting on April 27, the Council will appoint Kathy Kleinbaum as the next City Manager for the City of San Carlos. Ms. Kleinbaum will replace former City Manager Jeff Maltbie, who recently retired.

As a long-standing public-sector leader with over 25 years of experience in the Bay Area, Kathy Kleinbaum brings her expertise in municipal management and broad range of skills to the role. She previously served as Assistant City Manager for the Cities of Belmont and San Mateo, was the Economic Development Manager in Los Altos, and Senior Project Manager with the City of Oakland Redevelopment Agency. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Earth Systems from Stanford University and a master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley.

Ms. Kleinbaum’s areas of specialty include negotiating public-private partnerships, supporting housing development and policy implementation, and downtown revitalization and economic development. While at Belmont, she led many initiatives, including the adoption of the Housing Element, the design and implementation of an updated Business License Tax Structure, and the development of a Community Benefit framework to support the on-going diversification of the City’s economy. At San Mateo, she led the adoption of the local minimum wage, the implementation of the Kiku Crossing affordable housing development and downtown garage project, the establishment of the pedestrian mall on B Street and the City’s Outdoor Dining program, and the adoption of the City’s DEI Strategic Plan.

“I am inspired by San Carlos’ forward-thinking and transformative planning efforts and am 2 of 2 excited to help advance the City’s strategic vision in a meaningful way for the community, while preserving and enhancing the quality of life,” Ms. Kleinbaum said. “I’m looking forward to joining such a dedicated and innovative professional team.”

The City Council expressed strong support for Kathy Kleinbaum’s selection. “Kathy’s experience, collaborative leadership style, and deep knowledge of Peninsula communities make her an outstanding choice to serve as San Carlos’ next City Manager,” said San Carlos Mayor Pranita Venkatesh. “The Council is excited to welcome her and looks forward to working together to continue advancing our community’s vision for the future.”
