The City of Lynwood, in partnership with City Fabrick, has been awarded funding through the Los Angeles County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency (LACAHSA) Technical Assistance Program to advance innovative housing solutions that address the region’s housing challenges while supporting economic development and neighborhood revitalization.
The awarded initiative will focus on exploring strategic redevelopment opportunities along Lynwood’s commercial corridors and aging strip commercial centers by evaluating how housing can be thoughtfully integrated into existing commercial environments. The effort aims to create new mixed-use housing opportunities while preserving local businesses, maintaining economic activity, enhancing public spaces, and strengthening neighborhood-serving corridors throughout the community.
The project is funded through LACAHSA’s Technical Assistance: Innovative Housing Solutions to Produce and Preserve Affordable Housing, Protect Renters, and Prevent Homelessness program, established through Measure A to support creative and implementation-focused responses to housing affordability and homelessness challenges across Los Angeles County. Lynwood’s initiative is one of 31 projects selected countywide, with total awards nearing $7.5 million.
“This funding represents an important opportunity for Lynwood to proactively explore innovative housing strategies that reflect the needs and character of our community,” said Mayor Gabriela Camacho for the City of Lynwood. “As housing challenges continue to impact communities across the region, Lynwood remains committed to identifying thoughtful solutions that support residents, strengthen commercial corridors, and create long-term community benefits while continuing to support our local businesses.”
Through the initiative, City Fabrick, a nonprofit urban design studio focused on equitable development and community-centered planning, will work closely with the City of Lynwood to identify high-opportunity commercial sites, evaluate feasibility and implementation strategies, and explore policies and funding opportunities that can support mixed-use and affordable housing development.
“The conversation around redeveloping commercial centers should not be viewed as a choice between supporting local businesses or addressing the housing crisis,” said Brian Ulaszewski, Principal and Executive Director of City Fabrick. “This effort explores how existing commercial corridors can evolve to include housing, vibrant public spaces, and economic opportunity for all while retaining the businesses and neighborhood character that make communities special. We are grateful to LACAHSA and the City of Lynwood for helping advance a model that can potentially scale across Los Angeles County.”
The initiative builds on City Fabrick’s broader work throughout Southern California focused on equitable development, corridor revitalization, and housing innovation, including projects that integrate housing, public space, and neighborhood-serving commercial uses.
In addition to supporting future implementation opportunities within Lynwood, the project is intended to help establish a scalable and replicable model that may benefit other Gateway Cities and communities throughout Los Angeles County facing similar housing and land-use challenges.
